The IH Grammar Refresher is a professional development course for English language teachers who need to improve their knowledge of grammar and build their language awareness to be able to analyse and explain grammar accurately and confidently.

As there is no formal assessment on the course, the course is not officially certified by an academic body, like a university, who evaluates and moderates the coursework. However, certificates are awarded by International House Bangkok and include the International House logo, adding value and recognition to the award.

The IH Grammar Refresher is a professional development course for new and less experienced English language teachers who need to upgrade their grammar knowledge for teaching purposes. It’s an ideal course in preparation for the demands of initial TEFL teacher training courses like the Cambridge CELTA where analysing and teaching grammar is an essential ability. It’s also useful as an extension to such programmes, especially if you feel the need to further enhance your teaching competence.

No. The course is designed to teach the basics of the English grammar and it gradually increases in complexity as you progress through the course.

Yes. Although the course starts with basic concepts of the English grammar, it gradually increases in complexity as you progress through the course. In addition, you will also be able to observe how the trainers teach grammar and become familiar with approaches and methodology that you can replicate in the classroom.

No. The course is open to all teachers.

No. You should only have a proficient level of English, equivalent to CEFR C1 or above if English is not your first language.

The IH Grammar Refresher covers key concepts, rules and terminology of the English grammar.


The syllabus includes the following sessions.


– Understanding basic terminology

– Identifying meaning, form and pronunciation

– Analysing and teaching present and past tenses

– Analysing and teaching modals and conditionals

– Analysing and teaching futures

– Dealing with errors


There is no formal assessment and grading of coursework.

Quite busy! Each day will include input sessions on how to analyse, describe and explain grammar structures. You will also be exposed to teaching approaches and methodology that are usually promoted on CELTA courses.
