What is the CELT-P?

Primary school teachers can develop their classroom skills and teaching confidence with CELT-P. It’s a practical English teaching qualification that gives teachers the relevant skills to get the best from 6–12 year-old learners.

The course helps teachers to create strategies for the key challenges of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), such as developing learners’ listening and speaking abilities in large classes.  Teachers build on their teaching knowledge and skills, through a combination of online study and observed teaching practice with an approved trainer.

 CELT-P is a 120-hour course, which combines online study and teaching practice.  There are 27 hours of optional additional material for teachers to extend and practise what they have learned during the online course, which is delivered face-to-face in the classroom.

 

Overview of the CELT-P

 

• There are 9 online modules which:
  • look at key concepts and principles of English Language Teaching methodology
  • provides teachers with a range of activities that engage participants with course content
  • checks and consolidates learning with regular progress tests
• Optional face-to-face seminar for each online module that provides an extension of the online materials and practice activities and support: up to 27 hours of face-to-face study.
• A practical written task for each online module with a range of tasks in which participants apply their online learning in their classroom.
• Teaching observations with developmental feedback from trainers and consolidation of online learning.

Course Content

 

There are nine CELT-P modules. All nine modules focus on theory and practice and can be completed in any order.

Each module has a number of lessons, which all have the following structure:

• an introduction to the topic
• learning activities
• activities that check learning
• activities that focus on practical classroom applications
• a review of what’s been learned
• a short, multiple-choice progress test
• further reading.

5 Managing the primary classroom	·      Creating and maintaining a constructive learning environment ·      Managing primary classroom activities effectively ·      Managing differences in the classroom.
6 Developing language use in the primary classroom	·      Key concepts, principles and techniques in teaching language in the primary sector ·      How to teach grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to different age groups.

How Will I Be Assessed?

 

For the English Language Teaching methodology, you will be assessed on the completion of the online modules, progress tests and a multiple-choice teaching knowledge test (TKT:YL).

 

For the Teaching practice you will be assessed on the completion of portfolio tasks and assessment of teaching.

 

Participants who complete all the modules and assessments will receive the CELT-P qualification. The qualification is awarded at Pass or Pass with Merit.
