How many trainees will there be on the course?
On the ‘Intro to YLs’ course, you can expect a small group of 4-8 trainees.
I don’t have any teaching experience. Is that a problem?
No, this is just an introduction to teaching young learners. However, those with some experience are also welcome to join as they will still walk away with lots of practical ideas and activities.
I’m not a native speaker. Is that a problem?
No. The course is open to non-native speakers. However, all candidates must have a minimum English language level of C1 (Advanced) on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as all the session are presented in English.
Do I need to have an interview?
No, all you need to do is send in the application form.
Who runs the course?
The course is run by DELTA-qualified trainers who are not only experienced in running training courses but also teaching YLs.
What do the sessions involve?
The input session topics include: classroom management, vocabulary games and activities, teaching grammar, developing speaking skills, using songs and stories and dealing with problems. Every session is extremely practical offering the course participant lots of useful ideas, techniques and activities. The sessions usually last between 75 – 90 minutes each and are led by a trainer but typically require a lot of active involvement by course participants.
How is this different to the IH CYLT course?
This course is just an introduction to teaching YLs in order to give teachers who are new to teaching YLs useful basic skills and techniques. The CYLT course, however, is a much more rigorous course over two weeks with two input sessions a day, 4 assessed teaching practices with actual students as well has assignments and homework tasks.
