Founded in 1953, International House is a global network of over 140 affiliated language schools in more than 45 countries. At International House Bangkok we have a simple vision: to teach English to the world by providing learning experiences that transform, connect and empower our students’ lives.
Origins
It was 1953 when John and Brita Haycraft opened the doors of a small language school in Cordoba, Spain. Within a couple of years, they had already moved to larger premises, started a library, opened a little bar, and regularly invited foreign speakers to give talks. They had become not just a school but a ‘Casa Internacional’, or simply an ‘International House’.
Expansion
With a powerful vision, John and Brita launched the first teacher training course in London in 1962: it was the birth of what later became known as the Cambridge CELTA. By 1970, they had expanded to a network of about 30 affiliated schools. By the end of the 80s, International House was present in Europe, Northern Africa, South America, and South-east Asia.
Bangkok
In 1999, International House opens a brand-new centre in Bangkok. The focus is on English language teaching, exam preparation and teacher training. In just a few years, it becomes one of the largest CELTA teacher training centres in the world with over 500 graduates per year. The top graduates become our teachers, cementing the quality and reputation of the school.
Chiang Mai
Less than 10 years later, in 2008, we establish a second language school and teacher training academy in Chiang Mai. A 2.5-acre campus with purpose-built academic and residential facilities. Today, with over 140 schools in 45 countries spanning every continent, we are still one of the organisations that set the standards in English language teaching and learning.
